Welcome to our Introvert Interviews series, where I talk to introverts from all walks of life about their experiences and their introversion.

HeadshotMeet Nicole Hunt. Nicole is a Website Copywriter, Editor, and “Copywriting Ninja.”

Are you reading any interesting books right now?
I am reading “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” and “The Museum of Extraordinary Things.” I try to read two books at a time (one fiction and one non-fiction). The best non-fiction book that I recommend to everyone is “168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think,” and my favorite fiction book is “The Last Time I Saw Paris.”

What’s your favorite thing about being a Copywriting Ninja?
I help my clients grow their brands, build their audience, and target their ideal customers. The best thing about my business is seeing my clients identify their voices and realize that they can embrace them unapologetically in all of their online copy. I love when a client realizes that the little quirks that they may have tried to cover up or hide are assets in their online copy and their brand story.

What made you interested in being a Copywriter?
I have been a writer since I was a kid. I started writing songs when I was 8. As an adult, I was interested in business. I have a BBA in finance and an MBA in marketing. When I quit my marketing 9-5 job to pursue writing, I never imagined I’d be a sales writer, but one day I randomly took a job writing an “About” page for a client. Suddenly, my history of writing and my love of business merged together and it just made sense.

How much of an effect do you think being an introvert has had on your career as a copywriter?
I think being an introvert has been an asset to my career as a copywriter. There are a few ways to identify as an introvert. The way I most identify as an introvert is that I recharge my batteries by being alone or in small groups. I spend a lot of time in my head. I am very comfortable being on my own. As a copywriter, I work from home or coffee shops. If I weren’t an introvert, I think it would be difficult to spend so much time with my own thoughts. However, it’s sometimes a challenge when clients want to talk on the phone (rather than online) because my introverted self wants to communicate via email.

What was your reaction when you first learned you were an introvert?
I was entirely unsurprised. It was like learning that I have brown hair or that I thrive when listening to music. I had known it all my life. I just finally had a word for my introverted preferences.

On your Facebook fan page you said your “Why” for being in business for yourself is your family and travel. What is it about your family and travel that keeps you inspired and motivated?
My sister lives on the other side of the country. If I didn’t work for myself, I would rarely see her. As an entrepreneur, I can visit her whenever I’d like and work from her home. Working for myself, I am able to design my own life and spend time with my family on my own time (not my employer’s time). I can pick up at a moment’s notice and travel whenever I want. Travel is important to me because when I take in new cultures and places, I broaden my horizons, become a better person, and improve my skills.

If you were able to travel back in time, is there any advice you would give to your younger introverted self?
I wanted to study English, but I didn’t think I would be able to do anything with the degree. I had always been told to pursue a practical career. If I could go back in time, I’d tell myself that, while it’s true that the path less taken can be difficult, it is worth the extra effort. I’d tell myself to be brave and to follow my passions.

Is there anything you would like to add?
I think some people think of introverts as people who don’t like other people. That’s (in my experience) not true. As an introvert, I enjoy meeting people and spending time with friends and family. But in order to decompress at the end of the day and to be at my best, I need to be on my own or in very small groups most of the time. I enjoy down time a lot more than extroverts do. Working on my own offers a natural fit for my preferences and skills.
