Introverts gain energy by being alone. For some introverts this means they have to schedule in alone time into their bustling social calendar. For other introverts this means they spend a lot of time at home watching Doctor Who episodes on Netflix (or is that just me?). This blog post is for introverts who occasionally want to be around people but don’t like attending parties.

Here are 15 things an introvert can do to get out of the house:

  • Go to a movie.
  • Take a walk in a park.
  • Visit a friend.
  • Go to a zoo or aquarium.
  • Go to a library or bookstore.
  • Join a Meetup (I’ve found small talk is a lot more bearable if there’s another activity happening).
  • Join a bookclub.
  • Go to a book signing.
  • Volunteer at a nonprofit.
  • Go to a concert.
  • Join a gym or martial arts studio.
  • Take a guided tour of the nearest city.
  • Go to a museum.
  • Take a class at a community college, they often have one-day classes in the summer.
  • Join a makerspace (about makerspaces).

Being an introvert doesn’t mean being confined to a hermitage 24 hours a day. It’s largely a matter of understanding your energy levels and being willing to experiment to find a nice balance of time alone and with others. All of the above suggestions can also be done with a friend. What do you like to do when you need to get out of the house and be around people?
